Wayne Gurdler was part of the successful Barbarians team that went undefeated during the 2018 season winning both trophies for the first and second rounds in First Grade Div 1.
Wayne is a dyed-in-the-wool ‘green and black’ man having played most of his sports in and around the ‘Nui, but joined some mates this year in the Eagle’s Babas unit. He contributed to a highly successful back line that scored huge number of tries during the season.
Wayne is also a touch/tag rugby rep and at a regional tournament at Fraser Park earlier this year he was spotted by the NZ selectors looking to put together an ‘over 40’s’ tag team to compete at the World Tag Tournament at Coffs Harbour in November. He was ultimately selected in that team with one other from Wellington region to travel to the Worlds.
The NZ ‘40’ team went on to win all its games against various overseas teams and an Australian Indigenous side but fell to Australia in the final, picking a well-deserved silver medal.
Great stuff Wayne!
